How are the Vt targets defined? #

01- Children:

Vt targets for children are defined by age where ages are classified by colours according to the Broselow Tape (US) or Pediatric Tape:

• Purple: 1-2 years old (volume target between 70mL and 80mL)

• Yellow: 2-3 years old (volume target between 80mL and 100mL)

• White: 3-4 years old (volume target between 105mL and 125mL)

• Blue: 5-6 years old (volume target between 130mL and 160mL)

• Orange: 7-9 years old (volume target between 165mL and 200mL)

• Green: 10-11 years old (volume target between 210mL and 255mL)

02-Adults:

In adults, lung capacity depends on patient’s height rather than the weight. Patient’s height allows to estimate the ideal weight and the target tidal volume (e.g., the ideal weight for a 1.70m tall male patient is 70 kg):

• Small: adult height between 140 cm and 160 cm (target volume between 300 and 400 ml)

• Medium: Adult height between 160 cm and 180 cm (target volume between 400 and 500 ml)

• Large: Adult height between 180 cm and 200 cm (target volume between 500 and 600 ml)
